Basting Butter
Instructions
- Heat milk (1 ½ cups) and butter (5 Tbsp) to 110°F degrees.
- To the bowl of a stand mixer, add 4 1/2 cups flour, yeast (2 Tbsp), sugar (⅓ cup), salt (1 tsp), egg (1), and the milk/butter mixture.
- Using the dough hook, mix on low speed for four minutes. - If after 4 minutes the dough is not clearing the sides of the bowl, add more flour, 1 tablespoon at a time, up to half a cup more.
- Turn the mixer to medium speed for six minutes. The dough should be smooth and elastic.
- Dump the dough onto a lightly greased counter and gently shape the dough into a ball by folding the covers toward the middle until a sphere is formed. Place in a greased bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
- Dump the risen dough onto the counter and divide dough into 18 pieces. Gently roll each piece to form a small rope, about 5 inches long.
- Place on a greased baking sheet and let rise, covered, for 30 minutes.
- While the breadsticks are rising, preheat the oven to 350°F degrees.
- After the oven is preheated and the breadsticks have finished rising, gently twist each breadstick. This will give the breadsticks a neat look!
- In a small bowl, combine the melted butter (4 Tbsp), parmesan (1 dash), and garlic powder.
- Baste the breadsticks with the basting butter and place in the oven. Bake for 20 minutes until golden brown.
- When the breadsticks are done, baste them once more with the basting butter while hot.
- Serve warm.
