This recipe is a true Southern classic from a true Southern gem. Lené learned to make this buttermilk pie from her grandmother, and it’s the kind of simple, old-fashioned dessert that never goes out of style. After teaching us how to make the perfect pie crust last month, she’s now helping us put that knowledge to delicious use with this sweet, buttery filling and perfectly golden top. It’s humble, comforting, and just right for the holidays—a beautiful reminder that the best recipes are often the ones passed down with love.

Our Recipe Books features a unique collection of authentic Texas home-cooking recipes straight from the heart of the Homestead Heritage community, where tradition and wholesome ingredients come together to create mouthwatering meals.

Instructions
Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).
Mix the filling: In the bowl of a stand mixer fitted with the whisk attachment, combine all the ingredients. Whisk until the mixture is smooth and well blended.
Prepare the crusts: Divide the filling evenly between two unbaked pie crusts.
Bake: Place the pies on the center oven rack and bake for 40 to 60 minutes, or until the butter rises to the top and forms a golden crust.
Check for doneness: The pies are ready when the centers are set and no longer jiggle when gently shaken.
Cool: Allow the pies to cool before slicing to help the filling set fully.
